Match Report: RCD Mallorca 2-1 Real Zaragoza

Los bermellones’ final game at the Visit Mallorca Estadi this season ends with a victory

Lago Junior’s late winner ensures the final home game of our promotion season ends in a 2-1 victory against Real Zaragoza as we got the chance to finally celebrate with fans.

Luis García Plaza made a host of changes to his side for the penultimate fixture of the campaign following a 1-0 midweek win over CD Tenerife having secured our place in LaLiga the night before at a consequence of results elsewhere. Miquel Parera, Joan Sastre and Iddrisu Baba were the only players retain their place in the starting XI as the former was handed the capitan’s armband for the clash.

The heavy downpour of rain did little to qualm the party mood of our promotion triumph, although a penalty awarded in favour of the visitors following Dani Rodríguez’s handball in the 22nd minute temporarily silenced the few thousand fans permitted in the stadium. Despite Parera almost getting to hand to Luca’s spotkick, the forward made no mistake from 12 yards out to give Real Zaragoza the lead.

Despite an immediate reaction with efforts from Amath and Abdón ,the spotkick saw us head into the dressing room a goal down.

Dani Rodríguez would atone for his earlier mistake in the 68th minute when he fired home in style from outside the area on his weaker left foot to pull us level.

With minutes left on the clock and red shirts flying forward in search of a late winner, substitute Lago Junior produced a moment of brilliance to decide the fixture when he raced forward, cut inside and found the top corner.

Our comeback only added further impetus to an already buoyant home crowd as we kickstarted the promotion celebrations with our fans, although attention will now turn to our final fixture of the season against Ponferradina in a week’s time.
