Match Report: RCD Mallorca 1-1 Sevilla

Antonio Sánchez’s first-half goal is cancelled out by Erik Lamela's strike prior to late VAR drama

We were held to a 1-1 draw against Sevilla as Antonio Sánchez’s first-half goal was cancelled out by Erik Lamela prior to some late VAR drama in added time at the Visit Mallorca Estadi.

Luis García Plaza made one change to the side which drew 2-2 at Valencia CF on Saturday afternoon. The suspended Kang-In Lee was replaced by Amath Ndiaye in attack.

We started strongly and managed to create a handful of half chances during the opening exchanges and were rewarded for our early pressure in the 22nd minute when Antonio Sánchez tapped home at the back post after some good play by Ndiaye.

The goal seemed to take the sting out of the match as we were unable to capitalise on the momentum of scoring prior to the break, while Sevilla struggled to find their rhythm and never looked like levelling matters before heading into the changing room.

We came close to a perfect restart as the ever-dangerous Ángel latched onto a loose ball in the box and rattled the post just five minutes into the second half.

The visitors hit the woodwork nine minutes later as Rafa Mir dangled a leg out at the back post and managed to flick Lamela’s cross against the post.

The Argentine continued to cause problems and was on the scoresheet in the 73rd minute when he cut inside and found the top corner from outside the box.

Late drama was to follow as substitute Jaume Costa was to be sent off for a mistimed challenge, before Lucas Ocampos scored what the visitors thought was a late winner in added time.

A lengthy and much-debated VAR review ensued, and to the relief of the Visit Mallorca Estadi, the goal was ruled out for a handball in the build-up to the goal and the points were shared.
