Match Report: RCD Mallorca 0-0 Real Oviedo

We were unable to find the back of the net on a tough afternoon at the Visit Mallorca Estadi

We were held to a frustrating goalless draw against Real Oviedo at the Visit Mallorca Estadi on Matchday 30.

Luis García Plaza made just one change to the side which lost 2-0 away to Sporting Gijón less than a week ago. Víctor Mollejo was handed his first start in red and black in the absence of the injured Amath Ndiaye.

The game’s first opportunity would fall to the full debutant in the 6th minute courtesy of Joan Sastre’s whipped cross, although a good save from Joan Femenías denied the January loan signing from opening his account in red and black before Martin Valjent fired wide.

Despite a bright start and dominating possession throughout the opening exchanges, we were unable to find that killer pass and headed into the dressing room goalless following a first half with no further sights at goal for either side.

We wouldn’t have to wait much longer for a sight at goal following the restart as just two minutes into the second half Antonio Sánchez had the game’s best chance when he was prevented from playing what would have been a killer pass to the newly introduced Abdón Prats by Femenías.

Continuing to fly forward with little avail as the visiting defence remained resolute, Manolo Reina was called into action just past the hour mark against the run play to make two successive saves against Borja Sánchez.

Álvaro Giménez was next to come closest six minutes later, before substitute Murilo tried his luck as the fixture entered its closing stages.

As we desperately searched for a late winner, Los Azules would come closest to snatching all three points and would have done so had it not been for Salva Sevilla making a goal line clearance to prevent Simone Grippo heading home.

The points would ultimately be shared at the Visit Mallroca Estadi despite our best efforts, although attention now turns to our visit to Fuenlabrada in nine days’ time following the international break.
