Luis García Plaza: ‘Our goal is to fight to be among the best’

The manager spoke to the media at his pre-match press conference ahead of our opening clash with Rayo Vallecano

Luis García Plaza says his side are ready to fight for promotion ahead of our season curtain raiser against Rayo Vallecano on Sunday afternoon at the Visit Mallorca Estadi.

The boss will also make his competitive debut at RCD Mallorca having recorded three victories and a loss during pre-season, and believes his side will have to be at their best to get their campaign off on the right foot.

“I don’t care too much about pre-season results, I’ve always said that,” he told journalists via a video press conference. “The feeling I’ve got from the side has been good and that’s what has stayed with me.

“Rayo Vallecano is an important team and they are going to fight to go up. They are a very intense opposition that like to squeeze up high and that makes things more vertical. If we’re at 100% we can compete with them, but we will need to have a great game. Our goal is to be among the best and that’s what we fighting for. That’s my goal and why I came here.

“I’m very happy and excited for a great year. I know the pressure that we’re going to have, but that’s motivating. I’m at a very big club where we’re respected. That challenge begins this Sunday and, with small steps, we will try to complete the goal that we have in mind."

The signing of left back Brian Oliván marked the first arrival of García's tenure and the boss is excited by the options he now has in defence.

“Oliván is a player with experience in the division but is missing a few training sessions to be able to compete at 100%," he continued. "We're assessing the incorporation of another left back but we have the luck of being able to rely on Rafel Obrador and Iván Bravo too.

“Obrador is going to be one of the best left backs in the division one day and Bravo has been a great discovery – so much so, he’s going to start against Rayo Vallecano.”
