Leo Roman: “It is a very important step in my career”

The goalkeeper spoke to the media after being called up to the under-21 squad

Leo Roman has been called up to Spain’s under-21 squad for their upcoming European Championship qualifier against Slovakia.

Manager Luis De la Fuente has selected the shot stopper after Arnau Tenas was called up to the senior team, and Roman says he wasn’t expecting to be selected.

"It is a magnificent experience,” Roman said. “It is a very big step in my career and it is a great opportunity. When I received the call from the national team, I was a bit shocked and didn't know how to react. I was very happy but I wasn't aware of what was really happening. It was all very fast and unexpected.

"The reception has been very good - both from the coaching staff and teammates. There is a very good atmosphere, I am very happy.

"There is very healthy competition with the other goalkeepers. I'm very happy to be here.”
