"LaLiga" and "LaLiga2" will be the new official titles of the Spanish first and second divsions

The Spanish league has changed the official titles of the first and second divisions. As of July 1, 2016, “LaLiga” and “LaLiga2” will be the official names of those competitions, of which occurs once BBVA sponsorship expires.

The Bank has been associated with the leagues since the 2006/7 campaign, when the Second Division came to be known as the “Liga BBVA.” And, two seasons later, that sponsorship increased and the “Liga BBVA” became the official title of the Spanish first division, while the second division officially became the “Liga Adelante.” These titles have remained through the end of the 2015/16 season.

In total, BBVA has been a sponsor of LaLiga for ten seasons, during which the title “BBVA” has been associated with 3,040 different encounters in the first division, 4,620 in the second division, and 42 playoff games to reach the first division, a measure installed in the 2010/11 season to determine the third promoted team amongst the teams that finished the regular season in 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th places.

With this strategic decision not to adjoin the competition´s title with that of the title sponsor, LaLiga is committing to its own brand. By positioning its own name across two widely-watched competitions, LaLiga is strengthening its global broadcasting of the world´s highest quality soccer.
