Ki Sung-yueng: ‘Health is the priority before you play football’

The midfielder spoke to Play Red about the Covid-19 outbreak in Spain and football

Ki Sung-yueng has stressed the importance of putting health first following the Covid-19 outbreak.

As Europe’s footballing leagues suspend upcoming matchdays in order to combat the spread of infection, the midfielder says he and his team-mates are keeping fit while adhering to quarantine regulations.

“We’re stuck at home,” he told Play Red. “We’re training at home and as you know, this situation in Spain has become very serious and a lot of people are infected by Covid-19. Of course, it’s very difficult for us to stay at home not being able to train, but the priority is to be fit and healthy before you play football. We have to follow the rules.

“The team gave us an individual schedule and programmes. There is not much equipment at home, so we have to do a basic programme and hopefully this situation ends quickly so we can train and play the games.”

With his wife and young daughter living in South Korea, the former international says the situation in his native country is improving.

“They are fine, they are staying in the capital,” he added. “I think it’s more serious here than it is in Korea now. Korea is now under control and the people are okay. Covid-19 is reducing more and more, so now they worry about me rather than I worry about them.”
