Fran Gámez: ‘Last week’s win serves us nothing if we lose against Leganés’

The defender spoke to journalists at Son Bibiloni ahead of RCD Mallorca’s trip to the capital

Fran Gámez says RCD Mallorca must not rest on their laurels ahead of their clash with Leganés on Saturday afternoon.

Los Bermellones travel to the capital on the back of a memorable 1-0 victory over Real Madrid, but the defender believes the team must continue to build upon their good form.

“It’s three points more and that has given us a lot of confidence now we face a rival that will be fighting with us,” he said. “The win against Real Madrid will not serve us anything if we lose on Saturday.

“Last year it happened to us in Córdoba and Tarragona but now it’s not the case, we are conscious of maintaining form ahead of a very important game.”

Overcoming a spell on the sidelines before asserting himself in Vicente Moreno’s starting XI, Gámez says he still can’t quite believe the journey he has been on since signing for the club last year.

“I was injured and I was left outside the team afterwards, but that time was served learning not to return there," he said. "I’ve grateful for what the boss has said and I have to take advantage of the opportunities.

“Since I signed for RCD Mallorca my life has changed. My friends still think it is weird watching me on the TV.”
