Cucho Hernández: ‘When I feel overwhelmed, I think of those who risk their lives’

The Colombian spoke to Play Red of his desire to play again, life in lockdown and finding the back of the net

Juan Camilo Hernández believes the selfless actions of emergency workers have helped him stay optimistic throughout the COVID-19 crisis.

Regulations in place to help combat the pandemic meant the striker celebrated his 21st birthday in quarantine, but says those helping ensure the safety of others are leading by example.

“If I was alone it would have been very difficult for me,” he told Play Red. “When we get a little overwhelmed by it all, we think about the people who are having a really bad time and those who have to go out on the streets to risk their lives and to work as if nothing is happening – that encourages us to be well and to live with a smile.”

Having scored his first goal since May last year against Alavés following hamstring surgery and a lengthy rehabilitation, Cucho is keen to impress fans even further.

"Who would have imagined that I would be here, on this beautiful island and in this club with history like Mallorca? In the short time I have been here I have received the love of the Majorcan fans. I hope it can bring you much more joy.

“When I went out onto the pitch against Alavés I felt I would have an opportunity to score and that it would depend on me. This is how us forwards are and how we live: in front of goal and with our gut instincts. I hope that all this ends soon and I can continue offering goals and my football to the team.”
